High voltage polymer composite insulators have become the preferred choice for transmission and distribution networks worldwide owing to their superior contamination flashover performance, lightweight construction, and inherent hydrophobic surface properties. However, as the installed insulators progressively matures beyond its design life, understanding the cumulative impact of ageing on their electrical and mechanical performance has emerged as a critical concern for transmission system operators and insulation engineers globally. This paper presents an analysis examining how ageing affects the performance of high voltage polymer composite insulators across multiple voltage classes, diverse environmental conditions, and a wide range of service durations. The root causes of ageing and their consequences on electrical and mechanical performance are studied. key strengths, weaknesses, and vulnerabilities of polymer composite insulators are discussed and possible preventive measures are presented providing a clear agenda for future investigation.
