Protocol networks are the frameworks in digital communication and establish the requisite principles, structures and mechanisms according to which data is relayed, directed and accepted throughout intricate and connected systems. The networks take advantage of a mixture of routing and forwarding protocols to realize important aims like efficiency, reliability, scale, as well as responsiveness to dynamic conditions. The paper gives an in-depth discussion of three major protocols, which form the basis of the functioning of contemporary IP-based networks, which are Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), and Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS). The protocols are individually studied with regard to their architecture, working principles, core concepts, and real applications on a network of enterprises, as well as very massive service providers. Besides the analysis of the protocol itself, the paper also explores the heterogeneity of the protocol interoperability in the heterogeneous network environment, focusing on the most important issues related to the integration and coexistence.
